Don’t confuse schooling with education. I didn’t go to Harvard but people that work for me did.

But there is something else stopping you in getting to the next level. I believe, you actually have to be ready to go to the next level. What do I mean by that? Can you handle all those leads coming in? Are you ready to retrain your staff? To get more leads and sales is easy. The question is can you handle it and can you sustain it? Because if you can’t sustain the growth and your business is not ready for all those incoming clients, you will get one star reviews, and create a reputation of a business with a bad customer service. A business that does not respond to client’s messages on time, or give vague ‘call me on…’ answers does not build credibility or trust, or more importantly a desire to do business with.
Let’s take a look at some obstacles that stops your businesses from growing.
- Managing Your Staff
Problem: Your Staff doesn’t listen to you? Inability to manage your staff effectively. Your staff is getting paid an hourly wage. So a common thing that affects every business is that your employees lack a desire to do more work that they have to. You decided to get more leads, and it is all great. But handling more leads and more sales, or doing some extra stuff like producing content, making an extra phone call, or trying to sell more goods is all extra work for your employees. This stuff brings out a lot of resistance because they are getting paid an hourly wage and they don’t care about you getting more business.
Solution: Educate your employees about the importance of new leads coming in. You can do that through weekly office meetings. You should be running meetings that cover not just issues in your business, but also talking about your business growth. Sometimes employees don’t understand the importance of acquiring a new customer and how it will benefit them in the long run.
Train people well enough so they can leave, treat them well enough so they don’t want to.

- Fear of Change. Fear of Success or Fear of Failure. This is a funny issue. And people are really afraid to admit that they do have this issue. Getting more leads and sales really pushes you out of your comfort zone. Meaning, now you have to have those uncomfortable conversations with your employees, demanding them to be very accountable when they ‘miss a chat’ or are ‘delayed in replying to that customer’. Getting more leads and handling them in the right way and making the process automated requires constant supervision. It is an accountability test. And it really pushes a business owner out of their comfort zone. Now a business owner has to become ‘a policeman’ who is constantly asking their staff to give an update on their lead –sales conversion reports.
People always fear change. People feared electricity when it was invented, didn’t they? People feared coal, people feared gas powered engines… there will always be ignorance, and ignorance leads to fear. But with time people will come to accept their silicon masters.
-Bill Gates
- Personal Growth.
As a business owner you can get stagnated with your daily tasks. You just keep doing the same thing day in day out, week in week out, maybe even a year in a year out. And you tell everybody that you own a business, but you are actually doing ‘a job’. Well, yea you have to deal with more issues. And sometimes SMEs get lost in that rat race of just dealing with issues. But in reality if you want your business to grow you need to focus on ‘how do I get more leads?’ ‘How do I make lead to sales conversion process easier’ every single day. You need to educate yourself on these areas constantly. But constantly to educate yourself ‘technically’, you have ‘to be hungry’ to grow personally.
Knowing others is intelligence. Knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength. Mastering yourself is true power.
-Lao Tzu
